Today was a wind down ride!!! Well that was the idea till I got about 1.5km into it and felt like kicking into it. Just needed a blow out of the cobwebs and I also have a masochistic streak and wanted to feel the burn in the legs and lungs, (really it feels great) glad to say that I succeeded.
Did the reverse of the small block this afternoon; down Totara Rd, right into Whirinaki Vly Rd, right into Poutakataka Rd then right into Totara Rd.
12.71km, 27 mins 23 secs, avg27.8km/h, max 69km/h
Trying to decide at the moment wether I do the sprint tri (750m swim, 20km bike and a 4km run) or the 3-9-3 (300m swim, 9km bike and a 3km run) at Kinloch on the 08/02/2009, after the tri yesterday and the crap swim leg (didn’t feel to great after the swim) I am wondering if I want to slog out another 750m swim, but on the other hand I want to do the 20km bike and 4km run rather than the 9km bike and 3km run.
I guess that it will all depend on the amount of swimming that I can get in before then, time will tell!!!!

Races / Events
Tri day today. I took part in the Blue Lake Multi-sport Festival sprint Tri. I was estimating 2hrs to do the 750m swim, 16km cycle and 5.5km run. I was more than happy to finish with a time around 1hr 45mins (I will have to wait till tomorrow for actual time as I forgot to stop my stopwatch when I crossed the finish line).
The bike leg was as follows; 16.64km, 41mins 46secs, avg 23.9km/h, max 7okm/h
The swim was approx 25mins for 750m and the run approx 45mins
Altogether a good day with some areas for vast improvement namely the swim, although little training in this area probably did not help. I am looking forward to doing the same event next year with a hopefully much better time both in the individual disciplines as well as overall times.

Second to last ride before tri on the 25/01/09. I found out were the cycle leg goes so headed out today for a bit of hill work.
32.83km, 1hr 15mins 34secs, avg 26km/h, max 67km/h
Average cadence 90, after starting to read a cycle training book I have changed my aim in cadence training by trying to keep the cadence between 90-100. I am learning about Lactic thresholds, Rating of perceived exertion, Heart rate zones, Adaptation, Pedalling Efficiency and all sorts of other interesting info about training and physiology of cycling and the effect on the body in regards to training.
Todays ride I worked on trying to keep the cadence between 90-100 and correct pedalling technique, both of which seemed to work in conjunction with each other (each complemented each other).

Bunch ride cancelled due to rain so cycled around the lake with a young fella from R.A.T.S (Hugh 16yrs) who was keen for a ride. We managed a head wind the whole way so it was a good workout.
41.44km, 1hr 31mins 50secs, avg 27.5km/h, max 53.5km/h

Today rode home from work, good ride though a litte knackered (probably from loading wool in the heat this afternoon).
24.24km, 53mins 08secs, avg 27.4km/h, max 64km/h, cadence 80-85
Good hard ride that left me feeling it in the legs, even though I couldn’t maintain the required cadence I still felt like I had had a good ride.

Training
11/01/09 Went on my first bunch ride today. R.A.T.S have started a beginners bunch ride for those who are just starting or want a causual training ride. The route is decided on the morning catering to all so no-one gets left behind.
We rode from Cyclezone out TeNgae Rd into Vaughans Rd, back into TeNgae Rd at the TeNgae shops then headed out to Okere Falls. Stopped at the Okere Falls Store for a coffee and a chat. Then back to Cyclezone, straight back to Tengae Rd from Okere Falls. Two of us made a break at the TeNgae shops roundabout and rode at 40km/h till we reached Sala St lights, great end to a great ride.
I found cycling in a group an unusual experience but an enjoyable one all the same. Takes some getting used to bunch riding, very easy to sit at the rear as speed is kept by front riders and all you have to do is keep the wheel of the person in front and watch for hand signals (mainly to avoid obstacles). I ended up at the front of the bunch heading back to town and found it quite difficult to maintain the speed required (around 24-25km/h) as only have ridden by myself so far it doesn’t matter if you want to crack into a hill and shoot of down the other side you aren’t going to string the group out if by yourself, Found it much easier when one of the experienced riders rode at the front with me and set the pace and worried about the group speed and maintaining a speed for everyone.
The idea of the group is to bring new cyclists up to bigger a better rides, the idea being that after awhile we will head home around the back of the lake. Something to look forward too.
Ride today was as follows;
39.96km, 1hr 41mins 50secs (of total riding), avg 23.5km/h, max 44km/h.

09/01/09 Biked too work again today, great ride with legs feeling like they had a good ride! Concentrated on achieving a cadence of 90 and archived that goal, only dropped below on a few uphills that were too long at this point to keep the cadence up at 90 (legs can only do so much).
Knocked 2 mins and 4 secs off first attempt and achieved an average speed increase of 1km/h!
24.29km, 52mins 08secs, avg 27.9km/hr, max 55km/h, Cadence 90
Didn’t ride home due to fact of being too late by the time dropped load off so took truck straight home.
The great thing about today’s ride is the fact that I can see an improvement in my fitness and the cycling, I was really struggling to achieve the 90 cadence and today was the first time I felt that I achieved that.
All in all a good result!!!

05/01/09 Rode to work and back home again today felt great.
AM 24.33km, 54mins 12 secs, avg 26.9km/h, max 56km/h, Cadence 80-85 avg
PM 24.23km, 50mins 33secs, avg 28.7km/h, max 65.5km/h, Cadence 85-90 avg
Felt really great to not only do some training but to get to work and back under my own steam. The pedals are great really feel the power on the up as leg lifts the pedal up as well as pushes the pedal down wish I had these all those years ago when I used to cycle.

Training
Bit lax on the posting, hey what can I say slack as usual.
03/01/09 a short ride of 3.01km to test out my new cleat pedals, different to flat pedals (I know stating the obvious), power on the upstroke!!! Then onto a short run 2km, legs didn’t seem to want to work after the big ride on the 02/01 (funny that). It was good to do a transition though (transition from bike to run).
