The 100k Flyer today, for those not in the know this a cycle race of 100km from Rotorua to Taupo. I set out with the goal of a sub 3hr 20mins 100km, my actual ride time was 3hrs 17mins 57secs. I stopped for a water refill at Broadlands which was a mistake in the fact that I lost the bunch I was riding with which meant that I rode most of the Broadlands section by myself drafting of the occasional person that I caught up with or the occasional person overtaking me, (not the best idea). I also stopped just before the Taupo racetrack as I thought I had further to go than I actually did and needed to GO if you get my drift. Anyway it was very hard to get going after this stop so my elapsed time is probably going to be about 3hrs 22mins.
Still happy with the ride and time, I learned some improtant lessons which I can move on from and improve on next time around.
100km, 3hrs 17mins 57secs, Avg 30.7km/h, Max 63.5km/h. Heartrate; Avg BPM 166, 2% in FZ, 98% in PZ, KCal 3778
Official Time in 3hrs 20mins 11secs http://res.championchip.co.nz/View.asp?id=1316&athID=4660

Race Day
The day dawned fine and calm, (right now I’ve waxed lyrical) a nice day to do a Tri today with fine weather and next to no wind it looked to be a cracker.
I did the Lifecare Bayfair Tri in 1hr 22mins 01secs and I am very pleased with my time, it was a very fast course and my time reflects it. I started feeling confident that I could better 1hr 30mins and hoping to hit the 1hr 20min mark, this time is an improvement over the Kinloch Tri of 16mins 46secs.
Swim + T1: 18mins 16secs (placing 145=)
Bike: 34mins 29secs (placing 119)
T2 + Run: 29mins 15secs (placing 177)
Overall Placing: 150 (I assume that this has changed due to teams being taken out of the rankings)
Age Group Placing: 47
I achieved an average speed on the bike of 33.6km/h which I consider to be a great ride for me. This was a non-drafting race so it was all my effort. The new wheels definilty helped in uping my average.
All in all I had a great race and I am very happy with my result and the improvement in my time.

Last aquathon in the summer series tonight, I decided to cycle from work, do the aquathon then cycle back to work. It was a great workout and to do it and feel good after I had finished was a great high, it turned out that I did more than a sprint tri.
Swim 300m 6mins 11secs, Run 5.5km 34mins 20secs
Bike 26.57km, 1hr 02mins 39secs, Avg 25.4km/h, Max 76km/h

Today completed my second sprint Tri. Took part in the Kinloch Contact Tri.
750m swim + T1 (transition 1) 23mins 41secs
20km bike + T2 44mins 55secs
5km run 30mins 10secs
Total time 1hr 38mins 47secs
Very hot conditions after an 1100 start time, very choppy swim due to onshore wind made the swim leg harder for me though the wetsuit helped by approx 5mins over my swim time for the Blue Lake Tri on 25/01/2009.
The ride went well on an undulating course with what seemed to be a constant headwind.
The transition into the run was very hard and took the first circuit of the run course for the legs to free up.
All in all I am pleased with today and now will start looking to next Tri to do.

AQUATHON
I did my first aquathon (swim followed by a run, as opposed to a duathlon which is usually a run-bike-run format) tonight after work.
Opted for the short course swim of 300m followed by a 5.5km run as I wanted to try a swim with the wetsuit. I found that the wetsuit helped immensely but the long sleeves were to constricting (they will be shortened before the Kinloch Tri). I also discovered that my biggest hassle with the swim (through reading during the week and observation tonight) is feeling overwhelmed by the open water swim. Tonights short course swim was in the shallows and I was able to follow the line where the lakebed sloped off into deeper water, it was a much easier swim without having to overcome the feeling of “I’m out of my depth”.
Swim 6mins 50secs, Run 36mins 10secs, Total time 42mins 20secs.

Tri day today. I took part in the Blue Lake Multi-sport Festival sprint Tri. I was estimating 2hrs to do the 750m swim, 16km cycle and 5.5km run. I was more than happy to finish with a time around 1hr 45mins (I will have to wait till tomorrow for actual time as I forgot to stop my stopwatch when I crossed the finish line).
The bike leg was as follows; 16.64km, 41mins 46secs, avg 23.9km/h, max 7okm/h
The swim was approx 25mins for 750m and the run approx 45mins
Altogether a good day with some areas for vast improvement namely the swim, although little training in this area probably did not help. I am looking forward to doing the same event next year with a hopefully much better time both in the individual disciplines as well as overall times.
